When we suffer from back pain, our first reflex is to rest and wait (rather hope!) for the pain to go. Unfortunately, rest is rarely the solution, and can even make your condition worse in the long run!To treat-and prevent-your back problems, staying active is the best option available to you.
The easiest thing to doto get you active is walking … especially when you’re in pain and don’t want to do anything! However, if your back pain increases despite reducing the speed or the walking distance, it is best to consult a health professional to clarify the diagnosis and explore alternatives. For example, light exercises in the pool can reduce the impact on your spine and allow you to move without pain. If walking is not increasing your symptoms, you may have to progress to aerobic activity such as cycling or elliptical machine. This will help activate blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and allow a proper environment for your back to heal.
Another key factor in the prevention of low back pain is core stability. Trunk and abdominals strengthening exercises have been shown to reduce pain and improve quality of life. In addition, better core stability can improve athletic performance and reduce lower limb injuries (such as a knee injury).
In short, you should keep yourself active and minimize rest periods when suffering from low back pain. Whether you do cardiovascular or trunk strengthening exercises, the secret is not in the choice of exercises. Indeed, no specific method or exercise has clearly been shown to be superior to others in scientific studies. Rather, the secret lies in consistency and regular exercises in your daily life, as well as safe execution of any exercise. In other words, start an exercise program (ideally under supervision) and try to stick to it as much as possible!
