If you suffer from back pain, you’ve probably heard stories where someone had to have surgery due to prolapsed discs. Or even worse, that the pain came from a serious illness like cancer! The problem with Internet is that people remember the worst-case scenario and immediately apply it to their situation! In medicine, low back pain is generally differentiated into 3 categories. First, we have mechanical low back pain characterized by pain in the lower back region without any symptoms down the legs. Most of the time, the pain is intermittent and varies depending on the activity. For example, if you have localized pain in the lower back only when you lean forward or sit for a long time, it is probably mechanical low back pain.
The other category is low back pain with a neurological component. The main difference with the mechanical low back pain is that the presence ofradiating pain down the leg, from the buttock to the foot region. There is also a possibility of numbness and tingling in the leg or foot. Some clinical tests performed by a professional may corroborate the existence of low back pain with neurological component.
The last category is low back pain due to a serious pathology. This is what people are so frightened about when they read about it. Once again, it must be understood that this is a rare situation that affects only 1 to 4% of the population suffering from low back pain. Here are the general characteristics of a potentially serious attack:
- Severe back pain following violent trauma (such as a fall from a height or a road accident).
- Constant, non-mechanical pain that is not influenced by movement or rest.
- Severe chest or abdominal pain associated with your back pain.
- Night pain not relieved by changing position.
- Unexplained weight loss, often associated with chills and fever.
- Sensory impairment of the perineal region (called saddle anesthesia)
- Urinary incontinence of recent appearance.
You will understand that serious injuries are generally associated with more severe symptoms that are usually quickly detected by patients.
